7. Ben Larralde

I’m a generalist with a foot in the world of business and the other in product/software. I previously founded Hackster.io, an online community for electronics engineers, which had 1M+ users by the time the company got acquired.
In just one sentence, why do you want to become a growth mentor?

In your words, what does a growth mindset mean to you?
Nothing is set in stone; keep learning and exploring to push the limits of understanding.

Product-market fit and going from 0 to 1. This is a foundational challenge for any startup and I find it the most exciting.
Describe an out of the box solution to a complex problem that made you proud of yourself?
After we grew past the point where reaching out to potential users individually didn’t make sense anymore, I got the idea of partnering with existing dev tools manufacturers in the space and offering them to use our platform to host their communities. The result deeply shaped our business, providing us both with a business model and an almost unlimited source of new users.

8. Chase Mohseni
Describe yourself
Hey, I’m Chase! I lead the performance efforts at Pencil, a creative AI tool for e-commerce businesses. I’ve been fortunate enough to have some spectacular mentors throughout my career and I’m excited to give back to the community. Grab some time with me if you’re trying to unlock your growth model, building out your retention triggers for customers, or navigating careers choices. I’m here for you! 🤝
In just one sentence, why do you want to become a growth mentor?
To help others unlock their businesses challenges while also learning from them!
In your words, what does a growth mindset mean to you?
A) Learning is an always-on practice for you, which you layer on with a bias for action. B) You’re not afraid to fail, your biggest fear is not to learn from it.
If you could mentor a startup on one topic, what would it be?
Growth (Acquisition + Rentention)
Describe an out of the box solution to a complex problem that made you proud of yourself?
We were seeing customers stop responding to emails, even with mission-critical information. We tried in-platform messaging but people have become numb to that. We also didn’t have engineering resources to develop something built out. I created slack channels with 20 high-impact customers and sent every message we would have sent via email there. The results, our core value delivery metrics 3x’d in 1 month. It proved out the hypothesis that we need to be where are customers are rather than expecting them to come to us. Engagement isn’t like Field of Dreams.

9. Chris Winterhoff
Describe yourself
I love helping businesses discover and scale their acquisition channel or loop. My growth roles have spread across 4 startups/scaleups: 2x Proptech companies (Getagent.co.uk and Mashroom.com , 1x Ecommerce (Patchplants.com), 1x Car Subscription startup (On.to). My strengths lie in Paid Acquisition, building Growth Loops and Business Differentiation (i.e. how to stand out from your competition).
In just one sentence, why do you want to become a growth mentor?
I already mentor and advise companies but want to broaden my network and help companies outside of my direct network.
In your words, what does a growth mindset mean to you?
A growth mindset is understanding that your priority is to test smart and fast whilst collecting data. The ICE framework helps to focus relentlessly on gathering confidence and testing quickly to get to the desired result (e.g. more revenue, lower CAC, better retention rates).
If you could mentor a startup on one topic, what would it be?
Prioritisation. So many startups focus on the wrong goals, projects and/or metrics. Once priorities are set, the whole team or company can align and drive growth.
Describe an out of the box solution to a complex problem that made you proud of yourself?
Give your customers what they want.
It sounds simple, but whilst at Mashroom (a landlord property management solution) our product was good, but it was hard to get landlords to move from their current solutions. We tried hard to convince them to move or at least trial our solution. Nothing worked.
Until we started running educational webinars on topics they struggled with. We only came to this conclusion after having done extensive customer research and interviews. We created live webinars with expert speakers in the landlord taxation and lettings regulations space. They were a huge hit and we gained 3,500 webinar sign ups (of which close to 2,000 attended). This gave us a reason to speak to our potential customers and demo our solution within an area we could add a lot of value to our prospects.
They didn’t care about our solution initially. But they cared about taxation and regulation. So we gave them what they wanted in a format that helped us gain customers.

10. Daniel Eugénio
Describe yourself
I have been curious about almost everything since I was a little boy. Usually, it was about geography, math, astronomy, and science in general.
I did not accept weak or nonsensical arguments. I had to be convinced and honestly believe in the explanation for the “WHYs. “
As I grew older, I became increasingly overwhelmed with the amount of knowledge there is and frustrated to realize that it’s humanly impossible to get it all… how could I dare to dream to push the boundaries?
When I started working, I realized that few people could act as the bridge between tech and business, as it seemed very difficult to be an expert in both areas simultaneously. And there, I found my sweet spot.
As humans and not machines, we need to find the drive, inspiration, and pride in what we are building. That’s only possible if we know and understand the WHYs.
That’s why I am who I am. Daniel.
In just one sentence, why do you want to become a growth mentor?
Mentorship has helped me a lot throughout my career, and now I want to give back and help others.
In your words, what does a growth mindset mean to you?
It means I am not right all the time. In fact, I am not right most of the time! 🙂
It’s an act of humility to recognize other points of view exist.
It’s an act of empathy—both with myself and with others.
If you could mentor a startup on one topic, what would it be?
Career navigation 🧭
Describe an out of the box solution to a complex problem that made you proud of yourself?
I am proud of how I’ve constantly been reshaping my career, adapting to new colleagues, new organizations, different ways of working and relocating to new countries.

11. Ekaterina (Sam) Howard
Describe yourself
Hey, I’m Ekaterina Howard. I help startups find messages that resonate with their target audience. My happy place: turning qualitative data into voice-of-customer driven copy and designing interview guides for customer interviews.
In just one sentence, why do you want to become a growth mentor?
Help startup founders avoid common barriers that slow them down and waste their time.
In your words, what does a growth mindset mean to you?
Focus on constant learning and iterating, not being right.
If you could mentor a startup on one topic, what would it be?
Conversion rate optimization that is driven by customer research.
Describe an out of the box solution to a complex problem that made you proud of yourself?
One of the biggest challenges in a website copywriting project was figuring out the homepage messaging and the messaging hierarchy for 2 ICPs.
Initial team assumption was that those 2 ICPs will have completely different goals & JTBD.
After running a customer survey and following it up with customer interviews, turned out that the best, non-churning customers for both ICPs share the same goals, even though their buyer journey was slightly different.
Result: messaging targeting the best customers.

12. Eric Melchor
Describe yourself
Texas Expat living in Eastern Europe, I specialize in partnership marketing and using video to enhance business objectives and accelerate sales opportunities. I’m also the host of Innovators Can Laugh where I interview fascinating European Startup founders.
In just one sentence, why do you want to become a growth mentor?
At Bonjoro, I frequently engage on calls with customers advising them how they can scale their business with personal video. But it’s not just about sending a personal video. It’s assessing their onboarding and post-purchase experience. Advising where in the customer life cycle they can build trust with clients and persuade them to take action. Showing them how to integrate Bonjoro with their CRMs (i.e. ActiveCampaign, Hubspot, ConvertKit, etc.) so they can engage customers at the perfect moment. I get excited about helping entrepreneurs, small businesses, and creators stand out. That’s why I feel I can be a great growth mentor.
In your words, what does a growth mindset mean to you?
For me, a growth mindset is being humble, curious, and being able to apply insights discovered to one’s endeavors. Not afraid to take risk and try new things. For example, although I’ve always held a full-time gig, I’ve launched a podcast, taught as an adjunct professor at night, launched a one-of-a-kind kids’ fitness program, and left the retail energy/solar industry and moved to SaaS while in my 40s.
If you could mentor a startup on one topic, what would it be?
Personal video. As the Partnership Ambassador for Bonjoro, I’ve advised dozens of customers on how to use personal video to increase conversions, engage with customers/prospects, and grow their communities.
Describe an out of the box solution to a complex problem that made you proud of yourself?
To increase sales from our affiliate program, I
changed the onboarding process to add much more substance. I asked our top partners if they would record videos for us and then included those videos in the affiliate onboarding process and called it “”Bonjoro Bootcamp””. The engagement was high (above 50% open rates) and our affiliate conversion rate went from 4% to 9% in six months.

13. Grete Ling
Describe yourself
Hey, I’m Grete! I’m a charismatic retail-entrepreneur turned into Head of Growth in an Austrian MarTech company. I’m also a very proud Estonian living and working internationally between Europe and US for the past decade with the focus on taking businesses global. I strongly believe in collaborative teamwork and looking at user acquisition strategically as one big picture. Happy to chat about growing startups, product/brand marketing as well as all things leadership, incl. building happy teams.
In just one sentence, why do you want to become a growth mentor?
After years of building self-awareness and coaching my employees as well as superiors, I’ve realized my strength/interest to be helping people win (not “just” companies). And I absolutely love it.
In your words, what does a growth mindset mean to you?
For me, growth mindset means unstoppable curiosity and interest in never-ending learning. It also means being comfortable with being uncomfortable…all the time.
If you could mentor a startup on one topic, what would it be?
How to use personal growth as a tool for building your startup growth. I simply believe in people being the greatest asset and great KPIs being the result of team members excelling in their own self-growth.
Describe an out of the box solution to a complex problem that made you proud of yourself?
We wanted to increase our brand awareness without big PR budget but rather by implementing it as one part of our marketing strategy. So we dug into our available industry data to find an angle that would attract journalists. After couple of press releases we didn’t only start getting regular free coverage but also incoming data requests from well-known media outlets.

14. Iraklis Alexopoulos
Describe yourself
I started in software development and quickly moved to lead teams and build products, while always remaining super hands-on in all aspects of the business. I have (co)founded a handful of companies and advised and mentored many more. I am excited to put all my experience to work to help you grow your business.
In just one sentence, why do you want to become a growth mentor?
Because I want to help people avoid the mistakes that I’ve made, and share what I’ve learned along the way.
In your words, what does a growth mindset mean to you?
Growth is all about augmenting what you know and what you can do. And that takes effort, consistency, and persistence. You need to be brave enough to challenge what you think you know, and foolish enough to think you can make it. It means being focused and very intentional in how you allocate your resources, time included. It means seeing an opportunity when most don’t, and taking action on it.
If you could mentor a startup on one topic, what would it be?
Idea validation. This is a lesson I have learned the hard way, and I have seen way too many people struggling because they skipped it or didn’t do it properly. But most importantly, while validating your idea, you learn more about your audience, how to reach them, what do they care about, etc.
Describe an out of the box solution to a complex problem that made you proud of yourself?
While building a product that involved video calls, many of our users – who were not necessarily tech-savvy – were having a hard time getting their webcam and mic to work, because they would miss the browser prompt to allow for cam/mic access/permissions. Given that our product attracted thousands of concurrent users at times, this created a huge load on customer support. Obviously, we had articles and tutorials on how to use the platform, but still, that wasn’t enough. Even though I am a tech person and I am inclined to “build” stuff, what I have found is that for most user experience issues, the solution can be as simple as communicating expectations more clearly (sometimes just changing the wording is enough). So, we added a small extra pop-up (not overlaying the browser one), that depending on the browser would show a screenshot of that specific browser pop-up and a link to the browser how-to article with all the details. Our pop-up made it very clear, what the action that we wanted our users to take was. And it wouldn’t go away until users allowed cam/mic access. The result? We literally never heard from any users again about this. The approach I took on this one was: “think like someone who has never used a browser before”. Good product design requires empathy, and that can come only by talking to your customers and challenging what you think you know.

15. Joao Janes
Describe yourself
I am a Chief Marketing Officer with eight years’ experience in brand management, product and service development, ranging from a major FMCG brand to an Insurtech scale-up. I want to help you building your growth strategy, learning before teaching, and listening before talking. Playing with my daughter, reading for the 2nd time a book I’ve loved, and helping someone from my team overcome a challenge are some of the things that make my day.
In just one sentence, why do you want to become a growth mentor?
Helping others has been proven to be the most powerful way to consolidate and expand knowledge.
In your words, what does a growth mindset mean to you?
It is the obsession for improvement, mixed with creativity, strategic thinking, and data-informed decisions.
If you could mentor a startup on one topic, what would it be?
I will have to mention 3: brand positioning, paid marketing, and team structuring.
Describe an out of the box solution to a complex problem that made you proud of yourself?
In our last TV campaign, we had to divide our cost per visit by 3 and increase our visits/GRP by 2. Instead of strictly following the recommendations of the agency of investing in the moments with better cost, we split the creative into 3 capsules. Each represented a different type of relationship between clients and the product. By building differentiated TV campaigns for each capsule, we managed to reach our goal.

In just one sentence, why do you want to become a growth mentor?
Opportunity to “sharpen the saw” for me and pursuit of “aha moments” for mentees.
In your words, what does a growth mindset mean to you?
A focus on repeatedly finding & fixing a key constraint (one at a time) that is holding business back from achieving its goal.

What is one thing that I need to do that can help me grow tactically and/or strategically.
Describe an out of the box solution to a complex problem that made you proud of yourself?
When designing an MVP for my own product, I spoke to a few development agencies that proposed expensive and sophisticated approaches, but I realized that 99% of that is not needed. So I’ve figured a way to build and validate an MVP 20x cheaper and faster.

18. Mark Mikhail
Describe yourself
I am a master arranger who started my own business and later sold it in 2007. Now that I moved to the client-side, I realize what I did not know about navigating the enterprise and how it would have come in handy as a start-up. My role as a mentor is to challenge your assumptions and help you navigate the enterprise to help you achieve your entrepreneurial dream.
In just one sentence, why do you want to become a growth mentor?
I did not have a mentor when I started and sold my agency. With the success I have client side, I want to pay it forward to those trying to fulfill their entrepreneurial dreams.
In your words, what does a growth mindset mean to you?
Having a growth mindset means investing in yourself to take chances and make mistakes so you can develop a monopoly of knowledge that uncovers unique solutions to new professional or personal challenges.
If you could mentor a startup on one topic, what would it be?
How to conduct structured and unstructured research is an important mentoring topic, as not doing it right will affect confidence when it’s time to take important risks.
Describe an out of the box solution to a complex problem that made you proud of yourself?
Complex products get longer explanations than needed to show the art of the possible, and that led to low watch times and sales. So when I found a way to market complex products in 30 seconds successfully through YouTube, all of a sudden, prospects and clients reacted will a sigh of relief when learning about the value we provide… At 50% increase in watch times and 20% in leads, that’s when I knew I was on to greatness 😎

19. Mike Rocha
Describe yourself
Hi there, I’m Mike. I’ve been immersed in technology for over 15 years, building digital solutions for small startups all the way up to enterprise-level organizations. I thrive at the intersection of product and technology, where we take bleeding-edge technological advancements and put them to work solving real-world problems. I’m driven just as much by what problems we should be solving as how we should be solving them.
In just one sentence, why do you want to become a growth mentor?
I’ve both worked at and advised for startups in the past, and I find it incredibly rewarding to share the learnings I’ve gained over 15+ years working in technology.
In your words, what does a growth mindset mean to you?
A growth mindset means never being satisfied by “how it’s always been done”. To me, growth means constantly striving for that next tier, no matter how difficult or uncomfortable it may be.
If you could mentor a startup on one topic, what would it be?
I find several developers I’ve worked with struggle with the product mindset, and focus more on the solution without enough thought given to the problem itself. I would love the opportunity to mentor technically-brilliant developers on how to think of everything they do as a product, and how that might change their approach.
Describe an out of the box solution to a complex problem that made you proud of yourself?
I recently advised a startup that was concerned about protecting intellectual property on their site in the form of PDF document templates. As a result, they were set on finding a digital locking solution, whether capping the number of downloads, charging per download or building a proprietary PDF viewer that prevented any kind of download or screen capture.
I instead proposed the more positive solution of building their documents directly into their app instead, but also tiering access to certain aspects of those documents instead of locking users out completely, and proposed a limited view of the documents for trial users.
This achieved two positive results: not only did the client succeed in protecting their IP, they also made their app stickier by giving prospective users a taste of what they’re missing by not subscribing.

Describe yourself
I’m a Growth Marketer with a 14-year professional record working in multiple companies, including Uniplaces (C2C, B2C Marketplace), Cleverclip (Agency), Boords (B2B), Danone (B2C), Capgemini, and Google. I’ve done both consultancy work and mentorship at a local incubator.
I am passionate about growing SaaS B2B, and B2C businesses and love turning content into a growth machine.
I have a hands-on approach to demand generation, content marketing, and affiliate marketing. I love learning about new tools and ways to scale processes and reduce manual work.
In just one sentence, why do you want to become a growth mentor?
That “that’s so cool” moment: I’ve mentored startups in a local incubator in the past and it gave me immense joy to see how could I really make a difference to dozens of founders who had a great idea but were unaware of how to push it through.
In your words, what does a growth mindset mean to you?
Being open to evaluating, learning from, and iterating on strategy, tactics, and processes at every step of the way in order to find the best fit for the business. When doing so, there’s no such thing as failing.

Generating leads via both content and paid channels.
Describe an out of the box solution to a complex problem that made you proud of yourself?
Using Facebook advertising to target a B2B audience is always tricky. Happily, I found a 3rd party audience tool that allowed me to give Facebook ads targeting the kind of options we needed.
